Un vers n'est rien s'il n'est pas dit. Cela est vrai partout, mais singulièrement en français, où le vers de la tragédie est aussi celui de l'épopée et de la poésie lyrique : l'alexandrin, clé de toute la poésie depuis Ronsard jusqu'à Rimbaud. Encore faut-il qu'il soit dit comme il doit l'être. Mais bien dire un vers, cela ne relève ni de l'humeur du moment ni de recettes artisanales. Le recours essentiel est tour autre : c'est la langue. Moyennant les lois de la langue et moyennant les règles du vers qui s'en déduisent facilement, chacun saura manier l'alexandrin. Il lui appartiendra de régler sa voix et son souffle sur ce qui est ainsi requis. Enfin, il pourra dire. c'est-à-dire entendre et faire entendre le vers - ce qui est un plaisir.
